1. What is Pump Head
Pump head, according to textbooks, is the work done by a Pump on a unit weight of liquid, that is, the increase in energy of a unit weight of liquid after passing through the Pump.
But in practical applications, we don’t use energy units to represent Pump head; instead, we use liquid column height H, measured in meters (m).
2. The Importance of Pump Head Calculation
Pump head is an important operating parameter for the Pump and is a key factor in Pump selection. It determines whether the Pump can deliver water to the required location as needed.
If the head is too low, water won’t be delivered; if the head is too high, power consumption and electricity costs will increase, and it may cause motor overcurrent or even burn out the motor. For professionals, calculating Pump head is an essential skill. Below, we focus on head, flow, and power, which are important parameters for evaluating Pump performance:
1. Flow Rate
The flow rate of a Pump, also called the water discharge, refers to the amount of water delivered by the Pump per unit of time. It is represented by the symbol Q, with units like liters/second, cubic meters/second, or cubic decimeters/second.
2. Head
The Pump head refers to the height to which the Pump can lift water, usually represented by the symbol H, measured in meters.
For centrifugal Pumps, head is based on the impeller centerline and consists of two parts. The vertical height from the Pump impeller centerline to the water surface of the source is called the suction head, or suction lift. The vertical height from the Pump impeller centerline to the water surface of the delivery tank is called the discharge head, or pressure head. So, Pump head = suction head + discharge head. It’s important to note that the head shown on the Pump nameplate refers to the head the Pump itself can generate, not including the head loss caused by friction in the pipeline. When selecting a Pump, this should not be ignored, otherwise the water may not be delivered properly.
3. Power
Power is the amount of work done by a machine per unit of time, usually represented by the symbol N. Common units include kg·m/s, kilowatts (kW), and horsepower. For electric motors, power is usually expressed in kilowatts.
Estimating Pump Head
The pump head is not related to the power size but is related to the impeller diameter and the number of impeller stages. A pump with the same power may achieve a head of hundreds of meters but only a small flow, or a head of just a few meters but a very large flow. The general rule is that, for the same power, higher head corresponds to lower flow, and lower head corresponds to higher flow. There’s no standard formula for calculating head; it depends on your usage conditions and the pump model.
