Fire pumps mainly come in three types: electric fire pumps, Diesel Fire Pumps, and axial flow fire pumps.

Electric fire pumps rely on an electric motor for power to drive the pump. Most are centrifugal pumps and are the most commonly used type of fire pump.

The electric motor in an electric Fire Pump must be dry-installed. Fire Pumps are classified based on installation as horizontal pumps or vertical pumps.

Advantages of electric fire pumps: quick start, low operating noise, no waste discharge, and lower operation and maintenance costs.

Disadvantages of electric fire pumps: entirely dependent on mains electricity. If there’s a major power outage, the fire pump will stop working.

Electric fire pumps are the first choice for conventional building water-based fire extinguishing systems. They are commonly used in towns and cities with stable municipal power supply.

Diesel fire pumps rely on a diesel engine for power to drive the pump. The diesel engine should be of the compression ignition type and must have a battery to ensure the fire pump can start automatically at any time.

Advantages of diesel fire pumps: independent power, not reliant on the power grid, highly controllable.

Disadvantages of diesel fire pumps: slow start, noisy, exhaust emissions, and complicated maintenance, requiring regular oil changes, battery checks, and engine inspection.

Diesel fire pumps are often used in remote areas, mountainous regions, hazardous chemical warehouses, ports, etc., and are also commonly chosen as backup pumps for electric fire pumps.

Axial flow deep well fire pumps, also called vertical long-shaft fire pumps, rely on an electric motor for power. They are installed in wet pits, with the pump impeller submerged in water, connected to the motor via a long shaft.

Besides the characteristics of electric fire pumps, axial flow deep well pumps have unique advantages: natural direct suction, high flow, compact size, and easy maintenance.
